Shoulder Pain and Rotator Cuff Tear
Shoulder pain can make reaching overhead, getting dressed, training, and sleeping on one side unexpectedly difficult. The painful spot may involve a tendon, joint capsule, bursa, muscle, or a nerve referring symptoms from the neck. A careful acupuncture plan starts by identifying the pattern rather than treating every sore shoulder the same way.
Which condition matches you?
Rotator cuff-related pain
Pain with reaching, lifting, or lying on the shoulder often involves load-sensitive rotator cuff tendons or the nearby bursa. Weakness after an injury needs medical assessment.
Frozen shoulder
Progressive pain and stiffness in multiple directions can reflect adhesive capsulitis. Diabetes and thyroid disease can increase risk, and recovery commonly takes time.
Pain referred from the neck0 and chest
Shoulder or arm pain with tingling, numbness, or symptoms changed by neck position may involve a cervical nerve rather than the shoulder alone. Also,
Our approach
The painful spot is only one part of the shoulder system
The rotator cuff keeps the upper-arm bone centered while the shoulder blade and upper back create a stable base. Pain can change how this system moves, and protective guarding can make the area feel even tighter. Acupuncture may help modulate pain and muscle guarding, but it cannot repair a full-thickness tear or replace an evaluation when significant weakness or trauma is present.
The Evidence & The Anatomy
The rotator cuff keeps the upper-arm bone centered while the shoulder blade and upper back create a stable base. Pain can change how this system moves, and protective guarding can make the area feel even tighter. Acupuncture may help modulate pain and muscle guarding, but it cannot repair a full-thickness tear or replace an evaluation when significant weakness or trauma is present. However, by treating the surrounding muscles with acupuncture and learning how to properly move the shoulder blade, pain and discomfort can be significantly reduced.

How we treat it — our 3-step protocol
Differentiate the pattern
We review onset, trauma, painful movements, night pain, strength, range, neck symptoms, and any imaging or medical diagnosis.
Treat the structure
Selected local and distal acupuncture points, with electroacupuncture when appropriate, may be used to support pain modulation across the shoulder and related muscles.
Track useful change
We follow sleep, dressing, overhead reach, lifting, and return to activity. Worsening weakness or stalled progress prompts referral.
