Neck pain that radiates into the shoulder, arm, or hand — sometimes with numbness, tingling, or weakness. Symptoms often track a single nerve and worsen in certain head positions. The C5–C6 and C6–C7 levels are most commonly involved.
The neck is usually paying for what the upper back and shoulders aren’t doing. In the common “upper crossed” pattern, the upper trapezius, levator scapulae, and sternocleidomastoid shorten and tighten while the deep neck flexors and lower trapezius grow weak. When a stiff mid-back can’t rotate, the neck is forced to make up the range — so it overworks, and it’s the neck that hurts. Treating only the sore neck muscles loosens them for a day and lets the same load rebuild. Durable relief comes from restoring mid-back mobility and shoulder-blade control so the neck stops compensating.
