Fibromyalgia: widespread pain, fatigue, and sensory overload

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition involving widespread pain, fatigue, unrefreshing sleep, cognitive difficulty, and increased sensitivity. The pain is real even when routine tests do not show tissue damage. Care works best when it supports the nervous system, daily function, sleep, and the person’s broader medical plan.

Which pattern sounds familiar?

01

Widespread pain

Aching, burning, or tenderness appears across several body regions and can shift from day to day.

02

Fatigue and unrefreshing sleep

Rest may not restore energy, and poor sleep can increase pain sensitivity the next day.

03

Cognitive and sensory symptoms

Brain fog, headaches, digestive symptoms, light or sound sensitivity, and temperature sensitivity may accompany pain.

Understanding the pattern

The volume of pain processing can be turned up

Fibromyalgia is associated with altered central pain processing, sleep disturbance, stress-system changes, and many interacting factors. This does not mean pain is imagined. It means the nervous system can respond strongly to input that would normally feel less intense. Treatment should avoid promising that one muscle, toxin, or structural fault explains the whole condition.

What the evidence says about acupuncture

A 2024 umbrella review reported better pain and fatigue outcomes with acupuncture than with placebo. We begin with gentle dosing and use patient-defined goals to track pain interference, fatigue, sleep, flare recovery, and participation in daily life.

Our acupuncture approach

Start below the flare threshold

We review sensitivity, sleep, fatigue, medication, autonomic symptoms, and previous reactions so the first session is intentionally gentle.

Dose conservatively

Fewer needles, shorter retention, and gradual progression may be appropriate for a sensitized system.

Measure whole-person outcomes

We track function, flare recovery, sleep, fatigue, and pain interference rather than expecting pain to disappear completely.

New symptoms should not automatically be blamed on fibromyalgia

New focal weakness, fever, a hot swollen joint, unexplained weight loss, chest pain, fainting, or a major neurological change needs medical evaluation. This page is educational and does not provide a diagnosis or replace medical care.
