Knee osteoarthritis: Support for pain, movement, and daily life
Knee osteoarthritis can make stairs, long walks, getting up from a chair, and sleep feel harder than they should. It is a whole-joint condition, not simply “wear and tear.” Acupuncture may be one conservative tool to help manage pain and improve function while you remain connected to your orthopedic and primary care team.
Which condition matches you?
Load-related pain
Discomfort may rise with stairs, squatting, long walks, or standing. Some people notice a dull ache after activity; others have pain at the start of movement that eases as the knee warms up.
Stiffness and swelling
Morning stiffness, a feeling of fullness, or intermittent swelling can occur. Symptoms often fluctuate, which can be frustrating but does not always mean the joint is rapidly worsening.
Not every knee pain is arthritis
Meniscal injury, inflammatory arthritis, ligament problems, infection, gout, and pain referred from the hip or back can look similar. New symptoms deserve an appropriate diagnosis.
Our approach
Imaging and pain do not always match
Osteoarthritis involves cartilage, bone, synovium, muscles, and the nervous system’s processing of pain. An X-ray can help confirm structural change, but it cannot measure a person’s pain or predict every good and bad day. This is why a patient-centered plan looks at swelling, sleep, walking, confidence, medical history, and goals – not an image alone.
The evidence & the anatomy
American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons(AAOS) guidance states that acupuncture may improve pain and function in knee osteoarthritis.1 Recent systematic reviews also report potential short- and longer-term symptom benefits.2,3 We focus on changes patients can feel in daily life, including stairs, walking tolerance, sleep, and confidence using the knee.

How we treat it — our 3-step protocol
Understand your knee story
We ask about onset, swelling, locking, instability, stairs, falls, previous injuries, imaging, medications, and your goals. We refer for medical assessment if the pattern is not appropriate for conservative acupuncture care.
Support pain modulation
Acupuncture and, where appropriate, electroacupuncture may be used around the knee and related muscle groups to support comfort and movement. Treatment is individualized and does not claim to reverse arthritis.
Measure progress in real life
We track practical markers such as getting out of a chair, walking distance, stair tolerance, sleep, and reliance on rescue medication. If progress stalls, we encourage coordination with the appropriate clinician.
